2020-2021 Cloud Database Audit System Procurement Project of China Mobile

Databases of China Mobile store a large amount of information about enterprise customers, financial information, and even classified information of the country. These databases are accessible to Internet users, business partners, and employees of China Mobile. However, due to the lack of technical protection for the databases, the security of sensitive information could not be guaranteed during the use of databases previously. To solve this problem, China Mobile initiated a database audit system centralized procurement project for operation in 2020-2021.

Background

Databases play an important role in the rapidly developing information technology, and are the foundation and core of modern computer information systems and computer application systems. As the most valuable assets of a company, databases store important data and face increasing challenges to the security of information assets. Severe data leakage will cause huge economic losses. Leakage of a million records can cause a loss of USD 40 million, and leakage of 50 million records can cause a loss of USD 350 million. Data leakage incidents have caused an average loss of USD 3.86 million to the victim companies, up 6.4% year-on-year. Many data leakage incidents occurred due to the weak awareness of database security and lack of effective technical means. Some enterprises still audit database operations by checking log files produced by databases. This method degrades the performance of databases. In addition, such log files are easy to tamper with and do not display database operations clearly.

Solution architecture

Databases of China Mobile store a large amount of information about enterprise customers, financial information, and even classified information of the country. These databases are accessible to Internet users, business partners, and employees of China Mobile. However, due to the lack of technical protection for the databases, the security of sensitive information could not be guaranteed during the use of databases previously. To solve this problem, China Mobile initiated a database audit system centralized procurement project for operation in 2020-2021. The procurement project involves 20 regions and 60 suites of database audit software. The audit system is deployed in bypass cascading mode to guarantee secure, stable operation of China Mobile's cloud databases.

Single-node deployment, cascading deployment, or cloud deployment can be implemented in bypass mode without changing the current network structure, enabling the customer to meet requirements of level-based security regulations easily.

All database access behaviors and operation results are displayed clearly, so that administrators can obtain comprehensive information about database operations. Therefore, the system improves the capability of China Mobile to supervise database security.

Fine-granularity auditing for efficient investigation

The system audits database operations at a fine granularity and displays audit results graphically, facilitating post-incident investigation and ensuring stable operation of the customer's application systems.
